The Khaled Jassem Management Model (KJM) is a proposed recursive management framework designed for organizations operating in environments characterized by uncertainty, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, automation, remote and distributed work, rapid technological change, and continuous environmental disruption.

KJM proposes that an organization should not merely make decisions and solve problems. It should continuously transform its own experience into learning, its learning into organizational memory, its memory into new knowledge, and its knowledge into improved judgment, decisions, adaptation, and future organizational capability.

The central proposition is:

An organization learns from what it does, remembers what it learns, and rebuilds its future capabilities through that knowledge.

KJM further proposes that this cycle must be self-correcting, not merely accumulative. A recursive loop that retains and reuses experience can, without safeguards, entrench mistaken lessons, and accumulated memory can itself become a source of rigidity. KJM therefore builds three safeguards into the architecture: a verification stage that treats each lesson as provisional until it is tested, a conditional memory function that stores lessons with their confidence and their conditions of validity and prunes them when those conditions no longer hold, and a higher-order meta-loop that periodically re-examines the criteria of the cycle itself. These safeguards are developed in Section 4.

KJM is not presented as a replacement for established management theories. It is proposed as an integrative framework that draws on established traditions—including organizational learning, organizational memory, knowledge creation, continuous improvement, adaptive management, dynamic capabilities, agile principles, and decision-making—while proposing a specific recursive architecture that connects these domains.


01The Central Problem

Organizations operate in environments where:

  • information changes rapidly;
  • technologies evolve continuously;
  • artificial intelligence increasingly supports analysis and decision-making;
  • teams may be remote, distributed, or asynchronous;
  • employees and knowledge workers move between organizations;
  • organizations generate large volumes of data;
  • traditional experience can disappear when it remains only in individual memory;
  • decisions often produce consequences that are not systematically converted into institutional learning.

A central management problem therefore emerges:

How can an organization systematically convert its own experience into knowledge that improves future judgment, decisions, adaptation, and organizational capability?

KJM is proposed as a response to this problem.

03KJM's Research-Grounded Position

KJM should be understood as a theory-informed integrative framework.

It does not claim that every individual concept in the model is new.

For example:

  • knowledge creation has a substantial research tradition;
  • continuous improvement has a substantial research tradition;
  • dynamic capabilities have a substantial research tradition;

The proposed contribution of KJM is instead the integration of these elements into a recursive architecture:

4.2 The Logic of the Cycle

Knowledge is interpreted within context.

4.3 The Verification Gate — Guarding Against Faulty Learning

The cycle described above should not be read as an assumption that every loop improves the organization. A recursive loop can also converge on the wrong lesson. The organizational-learning literature warns explicitly about this: learning drawn from very small samples of experience can be misleading (March, Sproull & Tamuz, 1991), and organizations can develop superstitious learning, in which a practice is retained because it appeared to succeed, not because it caused success. A cycle that stores such lessons with confidence, and reuses them, does not merely fail to improve—it can institutionalize error and repeat it with greater conviction.

KJM therefore proposes that the transition from Learning (L) to Organizational Memory (O) should pass through an explicit verification gate. Until it is tested, a lesson is held as provisional—consistent with the decision-as-hypothesis principle developed in Section 9, extended here from decisions to lessons.

KJM therefore distinguishes:

Valid learning — a lesson that has survived scrutiny of its evidence—from superstitious learning—a lesson retained on the strength of coincidence or a single favorable outcome.

This restates, in KJM's own terms, the safeguard already introduced in Section 7: experience is not automatically knowledge. The verification gate is the point in the cycle where that safeguard is enforced.


4.4 Conditional Memory and Deliberate Forgetting

Section 6 states that learning which is not retained may be lost as organizational capability. That remains true, but it is only one side of the relationship. Retention has a cost as well as a benefit. The same memory that enables reuse can, when conditions change, become a template that prevents the organization from noticing that its situation is no longer the one the lesson was learned in. Retained practices that were once strengths can harden into rigidities.

KJM therefore proposes that the relationship between accumulated organizational memory and adaptive capability is non-monotonic—plausibly an inverted-U:

To remain on the productive side of this curve, KJM proposes that memory be treated as conditional and curated, not as an ever-growing archive. Each retained item should carry, alongside the lesson itself, two attributes:

This makes deliberate forgetting—pruning, expiry, and review—a designed function of the cycle rather than an accident. When the conditions attached to a lesson no longer describe the environment, the lesson is flagged for review or retired.

Importantly, pruning is not the opposite of remembering; it is what makes remembering useful:

The organization remembers what matters by forgetting what no longer holds.

This resolves the apparent tension between the model's emphasis on retention and its need for adaptability: memory is a curated capability, not a growing stockpile.


4.5 Nested Feedback and the Meta-Loop

The single forward arrow used throughout this document is a simplification adopted for clarity. In practice, the stages are not purely sequential; feedback runs between them:

  • Judgment shapes what counts as experience. What the organization notices, records, and treats as an "event" is already filtered by its existing frames. Perception is not neutral.
  • Decisions can distort measurement. Having committed to a decision, an organization may measure in ways that justify it, and some decisions are partly self-fulfilling.
  • Memory filters intake. What the organization already remembers influences which new experiences register at all.

KJM therefore adds two safeguards within the base loop—framing awareness at the point where experience enters, and measurement independence from the party that made the decision—and, above them, a higher-order loop.

The meta-loop does not ask "did we run the cycle well?" It asks:

Is the cycle measuring the right thing at all, and are the criteria by which we judge success still valid?

This is the distinction between correcting actions within fixed assumptions and questioning the assumptions themselves—precisely the single-loop versus double-loop distinction associated with Argyris and Schön (see Section 10). KJM invokes that tradition in its foundations; the meta-loop is where KJM uses it structurally rather than only citing it.

With these three additions, the model shifts in character. It is no longer only a loop that accumulates. It is a loop that accumulates and corrects—one that tests what it learns, prunes what no longer holds, and periodically questions its own criteria. This self-correcting property is treated as a proposed feature requiring the same empirical scrutiny as the rest of the framework.


05Problems as Sources of Organizational Knowledge

A problem should not merely be considered something to eliminate.

KJM asks two questions:

How do we solve this problem?

and:

What must the organization learn from this problem?

06Organizational Memory

6.1 Definition

KJM uses the concept of Organizational Memory to describe the organization's capacity to acquire, retain, access, and use knowledge generated through prior experience.

Walsh and Ungson's influential 1991 work develops a framework for organizational memory and discusses information acquisition, retention, and retrieval.

Huber's 1991 work similarly identifies organizational memory as one of the processes associated with organizational learning.

KJM extends these ideas by placing organizational memory inside a recursive management cycle.

The proposed relationship is:

The important KJM proposition is:

This is one side of the relationship, and this section develops it. The other side—that retention also carries a cost, and that beyond a certain point additional memory can reduce adaptability rather than raise it—is developed in Section 4.4 and revisited in 6.3 below. KJM treats memory neither as a pure good nor as a pure risk, but as a curated capability.


6.2 Organizational Memory as a Strategic Capability

Organizational memory may include:

  • previous decisions;
  • problems and root causes;
  • tested solutions;
  • successful and unsuccessful experiments;
  • customer experiences;
  • project outcomes;
  • market responses;
  • operational incidents;
  • AI-system performance;
  • employee expertise;
  • procedures;
  • assumptions and their consequences.

6.3 Memory as Asset and Constraint

The "with memory" path above shows memory functioning as an asset: prior experience is retrieved and reused instead of relearned. But the same retrieval can mislead when the new problem only resembles the old one on the surface. Retrieving a past solution whose conditions no longer apply can be worse than starting fresh, because it carries the confidence of precedent.

KJM therefore holds the two claims together rather than choosing between them:

Too little memory forces the organization to relearn everything; too much unexamined memory lets the past override the present. Adaptive capability lies between these extremes.

The mechanism that keeps the organization in that productive range is the conditional, pruned memory defined in Section 4.4: lessons carry their conditions of validity and are reviewed or retired when those conditions lapse. Retrieval, in KJM, is therefore always conditional—"has this been seen before, and do its conditions still hold?"—not merely "has this been seen before?"


07The Organization as a Knowledge-Producing System

KJM distinguishes between:

External Knowledge

Internal Organizational Knowledge

08Organizational Self-Reconstruction

KJM uses the idea of organizational self-reconstruction to describe the organization's capacity to continuously modify its own:

  • processes;
  • knowledge;
  • capabilities;
  • resource allocation;
  • workflows;
  • technology use;
  • strategic responses.

This does not mean that an organization changes independently of leadership or human agency.

The more precise concept is:

09KJM and the Decision-as-Hypothesis Principle

A KJM decision is not necessarily treated as an absolute truth.

It is treated as a context-dependent hypothesis:

10KJM and Organizational Learning

Organizational learning is a central theoretical foundation of KJM.

Huber (1991) identifies knowledge acquisition, information distribution, information interpretation, and organizational memory as major processes associated with organizational learning.

Argyris and Schön's work provides a major theoretical tradition for understanding how organizations learn and how they may question underlying assumptions rather than merely correct errors. KJM operationalizes this single-loop versus double-loop distinction as the meta-loop introduced in Section 4.5: the base cycle corrects actions within existing assumptions, while the meta-loop periodically questions the assumptions and success criteria themselves.

March (1991) highlights the tension between:

  • Exploration — developing new possibilities;
  • Exploitation — using and refining existing knowledge.

KJM builds on this tradition by proposing a recursive management cycle in which experience is converted into learning, memory, new knowledge, judgment, decision, and adaptation.

KJM therefore asks:

How can the organization preserve what it learns while continuing to generate new knowledge?


11KJM and Organizational Memory

However, KJM emphasizes a different architectural question:

How does knowledge generated through organizational experience feed back into future managerial judgment and adaptation?

The recursive transformation of experience into capability is not, on its own, unique to KJM; related traditions—including work on deliberate learning and the evolution of dynamic capabilities—also describe how experience is codified into capability over repeated cycles.
